Assessing the fall’s most intriguing players, in no particular order. Today: Sophomore Tennessee safety Janzen Jackson. • Typecasting.

Pre-Spring Bold Predictions

Inspired by a fellow co-worker who asked me to give him a no-BS prediction for how the season was going to go for Michigan this year, I’ve decided to write up a whole post filled with not only pre-spring game-by-game W/L predictions, but some personnel predictions as well. Defensively: • Demar Dorsey will see the field early in 2010, perhaps by the end of September

QB Focus: Landry Jones, no longer blinded by the spotlight

Assessing the fall’s starting passers, in no particular order.

Nebraska’s Hickman takes rare pass on invitation from ‘The League’

Between mock drafts, the scouting combine, upcoming “pro days” on various campuses and next month’s draft itself, the collective mind of the football universe is completely submerged its annual obsession with sizing up players bound for the next level, as well as the many, many others who desperately want to be. From inside the belly of the beast, the only mantra this time of year is “NFL or bust,” even for fringe players and obscurities the scouts seem to think have “bust” written all over them. One team interviewing former Florida State safety Myron Rolle during the combine reportedly asked the aspiring neurosurgeon how it felt to desert his team last year to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study overseas as a Rhodes Scholar, perhaps a reasonable (if poorly-worded) question in a profession that demands total commitment for success

Weighty consideration: Washington LB Donald Butler

All Donald Butler did at the NFL scouting combine this weekend was the bench-press test. And all Butler did in that test was perform 35 repetitions at 225 pounds, the most of any linebacker and No. 6 among the 330-some players in attendance at the combine.”I thought I would bench press around there,” Butler said

Brace yourself, Vols, for the second annual Bryce Brown watch

To no one’s surprise after he went AWOL from Miami last month, ex-blue chip linebacker and Wichita native Arthur Brown is transferring home to Kansas State, per statements this morning by his father and notorious “adviser,” Brian Butler. Brown was the first Kansas prospect ever awarded five stars by Rivals back in 2008, when he joined a horde of local products in a hyped freshman crop in Coral Gables, but his contributions with the Hurricanes were limited mainly to special teams. He immediately joins another prodigal Butler protegé, Oregon transfer Chris Harper, as the most touted member of the Wildcats’ roster

Penn State’s Special Teams Just Got a Lot Special-er (In the Special Ed sense)

Replacing Jeremy Boone was never going to be easy. The guy is almost assuredly going to be one of just a small handful of punters drafted next month into the NFL, and, save for a couple hiccups last season when he had two punts blocked …

2010 NFL Combine Top Performers on Defense

With another day completed at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, it is once again time to hand out some grades.

Boston College Center Matt Tennant; 2nd Round Pick Option for Redskins?

Matt Tennant | C | Boston College6′4 1/2″ | 300 lbs | SeniorProjected Round: 2 It’s safe to say there will be an uproar if the Redskins don’t use at least one of their first two picks on the offensive line. Matt is a 3-year starter in a zone-blocking scheme and is the nation’s second ranked center behind Florida’s Matt Pouncey. Matt has taken some game reps at Guard, which could make him the perfect candidate to take over the Center position in 2011 and fill a Guard hole this year.

Offsides: Mount Cody Shows Slim Figure at Combine

Alabama’s Terrence Cody, somewhat infamous for his size and pictures like this and this, took part in the NFL Scouting Combine on Monday. A review of his performance from Sporting News’ Russ Lande: It was a mixed bag for Alabama DT Terrence Cody. He helped himself Sunday by posting a weight of 354 pounds after weighing 370 at the Senior Bowl.
